RNLI SCARBOROUGH

Project details

The South Bay is the most instantly recognisable part of Scarborough and is a major focus for visitors.

The sweep of the Bay offers a spectacular landscape setting, dominated by the Castle Headland.

The council considers it important that in taking advantage of the many opportunities in this area for renewal and regeneration the need for contemporary development of quality is realised.

In recognising the special character of the South Bay area, design is a key consideration.

The scale and massing of the building when combined with the architecture, need to ensure that the resultant building is not only of its time but also is effectively articulated.

This has been achieved by the use of irregular shaped trapezoids in the external form of the structure – which have been combined with areas of contrasting materials.

This effectively breaks up the bulk and massing of the building, and along with the elongated ridgeline to the roofscape, which gives the building an aesthetically stimulating appearance.

It is hoped that the building will contrast positively with the tight urban grain of the townscape to the north and the buildings to the east. In addition it is hoped that the building will be distinctive and provide a sense of place.
